Awards/Premios

Hola chicas!
  4. Dí a las personas que has nominado que las has nominado, si no no tiene gracia.
Hi girls! This summer I'm not going to be around here, because I've moved to a place where the internet signal is very bad, and with luck I can connect a couple of hours a week. Besides I couldn't take with me my sewing machine, so there won't be a lot o sewing for me, despite I had some projects in mind. As I'm back in town I've taken the opportunity to write a fast post. A few months ago I received the Versatile Blogger Award from Maider of Masustak Eguzkitan. Once more I thank you. The rules for this award are:
  1. Thank the award to the person who gave it to you and make a link to her blog.
  2. Nominate 15 blogs that you like and enjoy reading (or just watching their photos).
  3. Tell 7 things about you to the person who has nominated you (well, to everybody).
  4. Tell the nominated persons you have nominated them, if not , where's the fun?

  6. I always have milky coffee, in a small glass if possible.
  7. I love CSI. I watch repeated episodes and I like any of the three shows.

Some long ago I also received the Liebster Blog Award from Azu from Un Rincón para Mary, and when I got home I've found out that I've been also nominated to this award by María José from Cosir coser sewing. The rules for this prize are:
    1. Copy and paste the award on your blog.
    2. Make a link with the blogger who has given to you.
    3. Award 5 blogs with less than 200 followers and leave a comment to notify they have won the prize.
    4. Trust the chain continues by them awarding their 5 favourite blogs.
Although I've been nominated twice I've chosen 5 blogs, although I'm not sure they have less than 200 followers:
    1. She Sells Sea Shells
    2. Lupecienta
    3. Sue by Sue
    4. A Good Wardrobe
Muchas gracias!
Y a todos, que paséis buen verano!
This prize thing is like a dog chasing its tail, I give it to you, you give it to me, and in the end everybody has a prize, therefore being nominated can lose its appeal. But I feel I owe something to the persons who have nominated me, and I want to give them back in some way they have thought in me for the prize. I want to give the Versatile Blogger Award to Azu from Un Rincón para Mary, besides being my dear sister, she makes divine little dresses for dolls, some from our childhood and some actual ones. I admire her for her patience to sew those miniatures. This prize also goes to María José from Cosir coser sewing, where you can see tutorials, refashioning and garments with beautiful finishes, she has also a new blog (Bolsos Can Colom) where you can see and buy the bags she makes. And finally, as she has the two awards, I give the Petite Mess Award (I have just invented it) to Maider from Masustak Eguzkitan, good reading and photography, besides style and amazing views. Thanks a lot!
And to everybody, have a nice summer!

I'm very happy to show you my second tutorial. Since I made my first tutorial for the Sew Grateful Week I've been wanting to make another one, but I didn't have anything new to show you. My little discovery last Tuesday is the perfect excuse to play a little. My Photoshop skills are very basic, so this time I've used PicMonkey, and I've loved it, besides it's free. This is a petite tutorial about the variation of the skirt of the Bombshell dress. I hope it's useful. I've tried to make it the shortest I could so that it isn't very boring. If I had missed any step you think is important, don't hesitate to tell me.

Tuesdays with Gertie and Sew Well

He hecho grandes progresos en mi vestido Bombshell.

Piece of selvedge fabric sewn with felled stich and catch stitch
    and padding on the cups

I’ve made a big progress on my bombshell dress. Don’t think I’ve made everything in one day, the truth is that it has taken me 3 afternoons, but I couldn’t make any post, first because I began my sister's dress and second because I didn’t feel like it. In fact, I thought I had lost my sewing and blogging mojo till yesterday that it was really amusing. On past classes I finished the bodice and put the padding on the cups. I finished the neckline with a piece of selvedge fabric, as Gertie indicates. Yesterday was the turn of the skirt. Finally I decided to use the original skirt pattern after seeing Amy and Lladybird versions. I continued with the size 40 (although I’m not sure this is my size anymore). The only alteration I’ve made is shortening the length about 10 cm as I’m really short. I made the other change at the time of putting all together. I hate gathering because I never make it even and I gather more from a side than the other, or because, like in this case it is very bulky and I don’t like it. So playing with the draping, I get this… thing. I made 3 pleats that I sewed on the wrong side and then I turned them over. And this is the result. I’ve set it to the point where the gathering is supposed to begin which is at 5 cm, but I think it would look better taking it to the hip seam. Although I don’t love it, is a detail that I’d like to prove again and on other garments, but with more fabric to play with. What do you think? Next step is finishing the lapped zipper, and beginning with the lining. It’s almost up!

    Breath!

At last I'm free. My sister Elena's dress is on her hands. I even couldn't take any photos. The wedding was last weekend and I hope she brings it back so I can make some photos so that you can see it. My idea was documenting the proccess and share the helpful links I've used to make it, but I've had only time to sew. I just could think about the dress. Now I need some days of relax, to get up to date my blog reading, tidy up my room which is like a pigsty and try to remember what I was doing before I devote myself 100% to the dress. This project has helped me to learn many things, and realize that I have to improve many of my sewing skills. I'm happy with the global result, but as for finishes, I'm not that happy. As soon as I'm in focus I hope I can show you new projects.

I’ve had a busy week, going from shop to shop looking for more fabric for my sister’s dress. I found the sheer fabric in the shop that I bought it, but the plain fabric was over, so I’ve gone all over the city looking for it… unsuccessfully. Finally, I could make the most of the fabric I had, by turning two of the pattern pieces, something I didn’t want to do, but at last I can breathe easy. I’ve cut the two skirts, and my surprise was when cutting the sheer fabric and basting the pieces together, none of the seams matched. I thought I’ve had traced the pattern in the wrong way, but the seams were right. I thought that, maybe, it was because they fall on the bias and they don’t keep the measure, but by cutting the second skirt which is a polyester satin, I’ve checked they match perfectly. What can be the problem? Obviously it’s the fabric, but would you try to match the seams by easing the fabric? Or would you just leave it and even the length when making the hem? I’m going to try matching them, but I’d love to know your opinion.

Another challenge I’ve faced it’s working with slippery fabric that slips, and moves and doesn’t keep still. Searching in the internet how to cut this kind of fabrics, I’ve found some tips, the main to make a sort of sandwich with the pattern, the fabric and another paper below to stabilize. To me that wasn’t enough so I wrapped my table in tracing paper with adhesive tape, I placed the first layer of fabric and I pinned it in the selvedge and the top of the fabric to the paper, I fold the fabric and I held the second layer on the same way and pinned also the fold of the fabric. Then I pinned the pattern to the fabric and the paper below. And I made a tailor basting to mark the pattern.

Chao.
After such a busy week, I didn't feel like following the Bombshell class, and my only progress it's been passing the changes on to the pattern. But I've been watching the next lesson, that is about sewing the bodice in the fashion fabric, so I will have everything ready for next Tuesday, because, I've changed my mind so many times I still don't know what my fabric will be. At first I thought in this fabric, which is curtain fabric, or upholstery fabric, but I don't like the print for the bust part, and besides it's a little bit thick. I've also thought about this grey fabric I used to make these shorts, since I have enough, although the colour doesn't pleased me, because I dress always in grey and I want to change. I don't know what I'll do, probably I will use the grey , to make the most of the fabric and because I don't want to go to buy more fabric. Will I be sick? Well, I hope I can make more progress and faster next weeks. Ciao.

I just can't get you out of my head!

Yesterday I couldn’t make any progress in my Bombshell dress class. I couldn’t be concentrated, I can’t stop thinking in the project I have in my sewing table. My sister has a wedding in June, and I’m making her dress. I’ve started too late, while I was compiling information about techniques, fabrics and notions to make it. And when I’ve started I’ve realized that I don’t have enough fabric. This time it’s not been my fault, I had asked almost 5 meters (a bit exaggerated, maybe) but the shop assistant who seems to know what she was talking about, and  attended us very well, by the way, said that 2,5 were enough. I think she didn’t know was what I was talking about. Maybe I had a bit of fault, because I should have made the pattern before buying the fabric. I couldn’t sleep thinking about changing the skirt or not, to save fabric, but finally I decided to buy more fabric and to make what I thought from the beginning . I’m excited and scared at the same time. I wanted to make something new, something challenging but I think I’ve got too many new techniques in just one project: Inner corset, waist stay tape, spiral steel boning and something else I don’t remember, although I don’t stop revising the making of the dress, over and over again. It has 2 layers, one with a corset and the other with a transparent blousy bodice that lets seeing the inner heart shaped neckline. The skirts have 6 panels slanted from half thigh to give it a little flare. Till I don’t have everything cut and sewed for the first try I won’t be calm.  I hope I can cumplir with the class of next Tuesday, because some of the techniques I need are taught in this couse. Meanwhile, you can take delight with Amy's Bombshell dress (Sew Well), my hostess. I hope mine turns out that well.

Tuesdays with Gertie and Sew Well

With the excitement of the beginning, I didn’t mention that the course I’m making is the Bombshell Dress. Yesterday class was concentrated on the fitting of the bodice, and particularly on the cups fitting. As I suspect it’s a little bit tight, but the only alteration I’m going to make is sewing a little bit out of the seam lines, because is just a little bit. In the cups is been different, I’ve had to make them bigger. Following Gertie’s instructions (more or less) and fixing my dress form as I could to my measurements, I drape the cups on it. And there it’s where I am. I had to repeat the class a couple of times, to be sure of what I was doing. I still have to transfer the changes to the pattern and make the muslin again, but I couldn’t resist and I tried the cup on my breast with the pins and all, and it looks quite well, but I won’t know it for sure till I sew the cups and I try the complete bodice. The truth is that the fitting is always one of parts that I fear most, I normally make my own patterns, and it's when I find the good or bad I have developed a pattern, and seeing that it turned out bad or I have to make many changes after all the work made, makes me feel bad.

So this is how my first muslin looks and the changes on the cup. I think this is the worst muslin in history.
Don't be scared! It's my muslin.

    Alguna sugerencia?
So that my dressform approach my size, I wrapped it with padding and put a bra, with a pair of bra cups and some fabric. I'd like to have a dressform with my size, but I'm hesitating whether adapting mine with padding and lining, as Gertie's, or making one with duct tape as Lupecienta. I like also María José's option, although I don't have that type of mannequin, but I don't dismiss buying one in the future.
    Any suggestions?

Tuesdays with Gertie and Sew Well + Versatile Blogger Award

Desdobla, busca, y si encuentras, copia, y luego volver a doblar.

A few months ago I joined the Gertie from Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing course on Craftsy, but I didn’t find the time to begin. Then I found Amy’s blog, Sew Well. She was dedicating Tuesdays to follow the course, and I thought it was a great idea to organize myself and be able to start once and for all. She even had made a button for those who want to join to her Tuesdays with Gertie. So today it’s been my first class, and I’ve loved it. I’ve reached the third class, as the first was an introduction, and the second was about how to download the pattern. As I had the pattern from the Burdastyle May 2011, I’ve jumped this part, and I’ve just copied the bodice, because I don’t know what kind of skirt to make yet. It’s been a long time I didn’t make a garment from a commercial pattern, I made a dress from Patrones magazine when I was 16 and I must have been traumatized, because I didn’t remember how difficult it is. Unfold, search, and if you found, copy and then fold again. When I’ve been able to find the pieces, I’ve copied size 40, which is the closest to my measurements, although I think it’s going to be small. But I won’t know this till next class, I have the bodice muslin half done, I haven’t sewed the cups yet. The class is very enjoyable to follow, and I’m very happy to realize that I understand more things than I thought in English. Now I’ve started, I wouldn’t stop till finishing. I’m very excited and I’m looking forward to finish the bodice muslin to see if I have to make many modifications. Besides it’s a type of garment I’ve never worn in my life and that makes more interesting to see the final result.

He dicho gracias? Graciás Maider!

This past week I’ve been a little bit off, and I didn’t know that lovely Maider form Masustak Eguzkitan had given me the Versatile Blogger Award. How exciting! The truth is that I feel a little overwhelmed, because I’m very new to sewing blogging. But I’m very happy. Thank you Maider! This week I’ll try to carry out the deals that take winning an award of this category. Have I say thanks? Thanks Maider!

    Moon Munkie Mistery Make: Notebooks/Libretas

    • Pegamento y tijeras.
    • Aguja y una hebra de lana.
    • Un día de lluvia aburrido.
You know that I recently recieved my package of the Moon Munkie that I won in the one organized by Seeks from The Seeks Speak. Between all the things there were some pieces of gift paper, heart and square shaped and a paper with antique drawings. I found a calendar we were going to throw away and I thought about recycling in a different way. To make this you need:
    • Gift paper, heart and square shaped won from the Moon Munkie (you can use pieces of gift paper you're throwing away.
    • An old calendar or paper for recycling, or an advertising notebook.
    • Stick glue and scissors.
    • Needle and wool thread.
    • A boring rainy day.

    1. Cut to the desire measure the sheets of the calendar and a piece of the carton (if it has) to make the cover.

    2. Stick the pieces of paper as you like.

    3. Sewing the sheets and the carton together in the centre with a wool needle and a wool yarn.

    4. And it's already finished. If you use the propaganda notebook, you just have to stick the images on the cover. Watching how it turned out, this could have been done by my 9 years old nephew and it would be better, so this is a good idea to entertain the children in a rainy afternoon.

OWOP Day 7: Petite shorts and review/Petite shorts y repaso

He aquí unas reflexiones sobre mi semana OWOP:

For the last version of the Petite shorts I haven’t wanted to make many changes, so the only thing different is thefabric, the waistband and that there are not darts on the back. Despite that, they’re the same, even the buttons are the same but in silver colour.  That’s what is like living in a small town, you don’t have a wide variety.
There you are some reflections on my OWOP week:
    ·         It`s been very productive, I’ve never sewn so much and so often before, and I have never used a pattern as a base, I just started from the beginning.
    ·         I’ve become almost an expert in  invisible zippers and installing waistbands.
    ·         My sewing has improved, but not my ironing. I’m the same bad as always.
    ·         I hated making buttonholes, I still do.
    ·         I’m not going to sew short for a while, so , my dear sisters, you will have to wait.
Before going back into the action ( I still have The Moon Munkie thing) I’m going to relax watching what the rest of the people have done, although I have  already seen some things and I have fell for some of them: I want to make a top with a sleeve like Maider’s from Matsutak Eguzkitan, get the clean finishes of Carolyn from Handmade by Carolyn and put into practice her French fly tutorial, I want to make a skirt like Rachel’s from House of Pinheiro, and the Stripey shirt of Andrea from Four Square Walls. And I have a lot to see yet!

OWOP Day 6: Pliegues y cuadros/Pleats and plaid

I love pleats and plaid. Keeping always the front cut, on the side piece I drew some lines, cut them and opened them to a 6 cm width. The rest is very simple. In this version I haven't added a waistband, but I haven't put facings either, so I just sewed the lining to the short and turned it over. I know it's not a very clean finish, but it was the fastest. The zipper is on the back. I like a lot this model, and I can imagine it as a skirt, or transforming the pleats in little pockets with a button as a detail, I have to test it

OWOP Day 5: Azul marino, otra vez/Navy blue, again

I love this fabric, even if it's bed sheet fabric, so for my 5th versión of  Petite shorts, I've used it again. This time I added 4 cm to the width of the thigh, and a 6 cm pleat in the front cut. As a detail, I have put some loops, following the technique of this tutorial, but this time I changed the zipper foot for the invisible zipper foot, because the cord was thinner. You just have to try that the cord goes along the hole and not to sew the fabric too close to it, it's very difficult to turn it over, I can tell. To finish the seams I used a fake french seam, and as always invisible zipper and waistband. It doesn't have buttons because when I found the right ones, there only were two, I hope I can find them in the town shop and I don't have to go to the city.

    OWOP Day 4: Stripes

This is my forth take on the Petite shorts. This time I took out the scallops and made the same cut on the back to get more contrast between horizontal and vertical stripes. I sewed the lining (in the same fabric) to the hemline, turned it and finished it a it was interlining with bias tape.

    OWOP Day 3: Petite sailor

Y he añadido unos bolsillos.

The day I wore my Petite shorts, I noticed that they fell down my hips a little, and it's been more evident on the second view, maybe because the fabric is thinner. So I have reviewed the pattern because I wanted something more fitted. The alteration is been minimal but it worked. This version is a little different. The cut where the scallops were, now is opened, finished with facings and closed with buttons. This time the opening is not fake, so I haven't installed a zipper. I took 4 centimetres from the width of the thigh and avoided the darts on the back, taking out the depth of the dart in the center back and side back. And I added pockets. It has also a waistband. I'm very happy with the result. My sister wants already a pair, in fact she thinks that this model is made for her. The best of all is that this is the cheapest thing I've sewn in my life. Besides that I had everything in my stash, the blue fabric is from bed sheets that costed, by the weight, about 8 euros 4'5 metres and the printed fabric is the most famous fabric from IKEA, I've seen it in shirts, skirts and dresses, and it costed about 8 euros more than 2 metres, also by the weight. I had the buttons too, my mother says they are 40 years. I remember watching them in the buttons box since I was a child, and finally I've found something to use them in. This is the first time I use internlining and I have a question: Which is the best way to finish the seams? Because by using the bias tape, being four layers is a little bulky.

También quería preguntaros: Cómo evitáis esto?
I also wanted to ask you: How do you avoid this?

I know that I have to cut patiently the threads, but sometimes I overdo the cut, and I want to know if you have a trick to make perfect buttonholes from the beginning.

    OWOP Day 2: Failure/Fallo

    It's so invisible!

    The zipper cut
    La cremallera cortada

Sorry for the delay and for showing you an unfinished project. This is a simple version of the Petite shorts, I just took two scallops out and shortened the length 2 centimetres. I also added a waistband. The reason they aren't finished is because the making didn't went right. In my attemp of not buying anything and make the most of what I have, I din't notice that the zipper was cut till it was too late. The perfect it has been! I'm still thinking they're cute though. They're so pretty hanging from the rope! Thanks so much for your coments on the first day and your advices on how to pose and make photos. I'll take it into account, but I still have to get confidence in front of the camera.
