Bombshell sarong skirt/falda: Variation/Variación

Estoy muy contenta de enseñaros mi segundo tutorial. Desde que hice mi primer tutorial para la Sew Grateful Week he querido hacer algún otro, pero no tenía nada nuevo que enseñaros. Mi pequeño descubrimiento del martes es la excusa perfecta para jugar un poco. Mis conocimientos de Photoshop son muy básicos, así que esta vez he usado PicMonkey, y me ha encantado, además es gratis. Este es un pequeño tutorial sobre la variación de la falda del vestido Bombshell. Espero que os sea útil. He intentado hacerlo lo más corto posible para que no sea muy aburrido. Si me he olvidado de algún paso que creáis importante no dudéis en decírmelo.
I'm very happy to show you my second tutorial. Since I made my first tutorial for the Sew Grateful Week I've been wanting to make another one, but I didn't have anything new to show you. My little discovery last Tuesday is the perfect excuse to play a little. My Photoshop skills are very basic, so this time I've used PicMonkey, and I've loved it, besides it's free. This is a petite tutorial about the variation of the skirt of the Bombshell dress. I hope it's useful. I've tried to make it the shortest I could so that it isn't very boring. If I had missed any step you think is important, don't hesitate to tell me.
 

Tuesdays with Gertie and Sew Well

He hecho grandes progresos en mi vestido Bombshell. No penséis que lo he hecho todo en una día, la verdad es que me ha llevado 3 tardes, pero no pude hacer ninguna entrada, primero porque empecé a hacer el vestido de mi hermana y segundo porque no me apetecía. De hecho, creía que había perdido mis ganas de costura y blogueo, hasta la tarde de ayer que fue realmente entretenida. En las clases anteriores terminé el corpiño y coloqué la guata en las copas. Terminé la línea del escote con un trozo del orillo de la tela, como indica Gertie. Ayer me tocaba empezar con la falda. Al final me decidí por la falda del modelo original, después de haber visto las versiones de Amy y de Lladybird. He seguido con la talla 40 (aunque ya no estoy segura de que esa siga siendo mi talla). La única alteración que he hecho ha sido acortarla unos 10 cm, ya que soy muy bajita. El otro cambio que he hecho ha sido a la hora de montarla. Odio hacer fruncidos porque nunca me quedan igualados y pongo más en un lado que en otro o porque, como en este caso, queda muy abultado y no me gusta. Así que jugando un poco con el drapeo, dí con esta... cosa. Hice tres pliegues que cosí por el revés y luego los dí la vuelta. Y este es el resultado. Yo lo llevo al punto donde se supone empieza el fruncido que es a 5 cm, pero creo que quedaría mejor llevándolo hasta la costura de la cadera. Aunque no me enamora, es un detalle que me gustaría probar otra vez y en otras prendas, con más tela para jugar. Qué os parece? El siguiente paso es terminar la cremallera que tengo medio colocada y empezar con el forro. Ya queda poco!

I’ve made a big progress on my bombshell dress. Don’t think I’ve made everything in one day, the truth is that it has taken me 3 afternoons, but I couldn’t make any post, first because I began my sister's dress and second because I didn’t feel like it. In fact, I thought I had lost my sewing and blogging mojo till yesterday that it was really amusing. On past classes I finished the bodice and put the padding on the cups. I finished the neckline with a piece of selvedge fabric, as Gertie indicates. Yesterday was the turn of the skirt. Finally I decided to use the original skirt pattern after seeing Amy and Lladybird versions. I continued with the size 40 (although I’m not sure this is my size anymore). The only alteration I’ve made is shortening the length about 10 cm as I’m really short. I made the other change at the time of putting all together. I hate gathering because I never make it even and I gather more from a side than the other, or because, like in this case it is very bulky and I don’t like it. So playing with the draping, I get this… thing. I made 3 pleats that I sewed on the wrong side and then I turned them over. And this is the result. I’ve set it to the point where the gathering is supposed to begin which is at 5 cm, but I think it would look better taking it to the hip seam. Although I don’t love it, is a detail that I’d like to prove again and on other garments, but with more fabric to play with. What do you think? Next step is finishing the lapped zipper, and beginning with the lining. It’s almost up!

Small progress/Pequeño avance

He pasado una semana movidita, yendo de tienda en tienda buscando más tela para el vestido de mi hermana. La tela transparente la pude encontrar en la tienda en la que la compré, pero la tela lisa se había terminado así que me he recorrido toda la ciudad buscándola... sin éxito. Finalmente, conseguí aprovechar la tela que tenía, dando la vuelta a dos de las piezas, cosa que no quería hacer, pero al fin he podido respirar tranquila. He cortado las dos faldas, y cual fue mi sorpresa cuando al cortar la tela transparente e hilvanar las piezas juntas, no coincidía ninguna de las costuras. Pensaba que había hecho mal el patrón, pero las costuras coincidían perfectamente. Pensé que tal vez era por que al caer al bies no mantenían la medida, pero al cortar la segunda falda, que es un satén de poliéster, he comprobado que coinciden perfectamente. Cuál puede ser el problema? Obviamente es la tela, pero vosotras intentariáis hacer coincidir las costuras embebiendo la tela? o simplemente lo dejariáis estar e igualar al hacer el dobladillo? Seguramente intentaré hacerlas coincidir, pero me gustaría saber vuestra opinión.
I’ve had a busy week, going from shop to shop looking for more fabric for my sister’s dress. I found the sheer fabric in the shop that I bought it, but the plain fabric was over, so I’ve gone all over the city looking for it… unsuccessfully. Finally, I could make the most of the fabric I had, by turning two of the pattern pieces, something I didn’t want to do, but at last I can breathe easy. I’ve cut the two skirts, and my surprise was when cutting the sheer fabric and basting the pieces together, none of the seams matched. I thought I’ve had traced the pattern in the wrong way, but the seams were right. I thought that, maybe, it was because they fall on the bias and they don’t keep the measure, but by cutting the second skirt which is a polyester satin, I’ve checked they match perfectly. What can be the problem? Obviously it’s the fabric, but would you try to match the seams by easing the fabric? Or would you just leave it and even the length when making the hem? I’m going to try matching them, but I’d love to know your opinion.

Otro desafío al que me he enfrentado es trabajar con telas sedosas, que se deslizan y se mueven y no se están quietas. Buscando en internet como cortar este tipo de telas he encontrado algunos truquillos, el principal hacer una especie de sandwich con el patrón, la tela y otro papel debajo para estabilizar. Para mí no era suficiente con eso, así que envolví mi mesa de corte en papel de hacer patrones pegándolo con cinta adhesiva, coloqué la primera capa de tela y la sujeté con alfileres al papel en el orillo y en el comienzo de la tela, doblé la tela y sujeté la segunda capa de tela de igual forma y esta vez también el doblez. Así coloqué el patrón que sujeté a la tela y al papel de debajo. Después pasé hilos flojos alrededor.

Another challenge I’ve faced it’s working with slippery fabric that slips, and moves and doesn’t keep still. Searching in the internet how to cut this kind of fabrics, I’ve found some tips, the main to make a sort of sandwich with the pattern, the fabric and another paper below to stabilize. To me that wasn’t enough so I wrapped my table in tracing paper with adhesive tape, I placed the first layer of fabric and I pinned it in the selvedge and the top of the fabric to the paper, I fold the fabric and I held the second layer on the same way and pinned also the fold of the fabric. Then I pinned the pattern to the fabric and the paper below. And I made a tailor basting to mark the pattern.

Después de tanto ajetreo, no tenía ganas de seguir con la clase del Bombshell, y mi único avance ha sido pasar los cambios al patrón. Pero he estado mirando el video de la siguiente clase, que consiste en coser el cuerpo en la tela definitiva, así podré tener todo preparado para el próximo martes, por que, he cambiado tanto de opinión que no sé cual será mi tela. En principio había pensado en esta tela, que por cieto es de cortina, o de tapicería, pero el estampado no me convence para la parte del pecho, y además, es un poco gruesa. También había pensado en la tela gris que utilicé para hacer estos shorts, ya que tengo suficiente, aunque el color tampoco me agrada, por que siempre voy de gris y quiero cambiar. No sé lo que haré, probablemente, lo haré con la gris, para aprovechar la tela y por que no quiero ir a comprar más. Estaré enferma? Bueno, espero hacer más avances y más rápidos en las próximas semanas. Chao.
After such a busy week, I didn't feel like following the Bombshell class, and my only progress it's been passing the changes on to the pattern. But I've been watching the next lesson, that is about sewing the bodice in the fashion fabric, so I will have everything ready for next Tuesday, because, I've changed my mind so many times I still don't know what my fabric will be. At first I thought in this fabric, which is curtain fabric, or upholstery fabric, but I don't like the print for the bust part, and besides it's a little bit thick. I've also thought about this grey fabric I used to make these shorts, since I have enough, although the colour doesn't pleased me, because I dress always in grey and I want to change. I don't know what I'll do, probably I will use the grey , to make the most of the fabric and because I don't want to go to buy more fabric. Will I be sick? Well, I hope I can make more progress and faster next weeks. Ciao.

I just can't get you out of my head!

Ayer no pude seguir ninguna clase del Bombshell dress. No me pude concentrar, no paro de pensar en el proyecto que tengo en la mesa. Mi hermana tiene una boda en junio, y yo estoy haciéndole el vestido. He empezado demasiado tarde, mientras recopilaba información sobre técnicas, telas y artículos para confeccionarle. Y cuando he empezado me he dado cuenta de que no tengo tela suficiente. Esta vez la culpa no ha sido mía, yo había pedido casi 5 metros (un poco exagerado, quizás), pero la dependienta de la tienda que parecía que sabía de lo que hablaba y nos atendió estupendamente, por cierto, me dijo que con 2,5 tenía suficiente. Creo que lo que no sabía es de lo que hablaba yo. Quizás si tuve algo de culpa, ya que debí haber hecho el patrón antes de ir a por la tela. No pude dormir pensando en cambiar la falda del vestido para ahorrar tela, pero al final decidí que iría a por más tela para hacer lo que tenía pensando desde el principio. Estoy ilusionada y aterrada al mismo tiempo. Quería hacer algo nuevo, pero creo que he juntado demasiadas técnicas nuevas en un solo proyecto: Corpiño interior, cinta de ajuste en la cintura, ballenas metálicas y alguna más que ahora no me acuerdo, aunque no paro de repasar una y otra vez la confección del vestido. Consta de 2 capas, una con corpiño y la otra con cuerpo ablusado semitransparente que deja ver el escote corazón del interior. La falda tiene 6 paneles sesgados a partir de medio muslo para darle un poco de vuelo. Hasta que no tenga todo cortado y cosido para la primera prueba no estaré tranquila. Espero cumplir con mi clase del martes que viene, ya que algunas de las técnicas que necesito se enseñan en este curso. Mientras tanto podéis deleitaros con el Bombshell dress de Amy (Sew Well), mi anfitriona. Espero que a mi me quede así de bien.

Yesterday I couldn’t make any progress in my Bombshell dress class. I couldn’t be concentrated, I can’t stop thinking in the project I have in my sewing table. My sister has a wedding in June, and I’m making her dress. I’ve started too late, while I was compiling information about techniques, fabrics and notions to make it. And when I’ve started I’ve realized that I don’t have enough fabric. This time it’s not been my fault, I had asked almost 5 meters (a bit exaggerated, maybe) but the shop assistant who seems to know what she was talking about, and  attended us very well, by the way, said that 2,5 were enough. I think she didn’t know was what I was talking about. Maybe I had a bit of fault, because I should have made the pattern before buying the fabric. I couldn’t sleep thinking about changing the skirt or not, to save fabric, but finally I decided to buy more fabric and to make what I thought from the beginning . I’m excited and scared at the same time. I wanted to make something new, something challenging but I think I’ve got too many new techniques in just one project: Inner corset, waist stay tape, spiral steel boning and something else I don’t remember, although I don’t stop revising the making of the dress, over and over again. It has 2 layers, one with a corset and the other with a transparent blousy bodice that lets seeing the inner heart shaped neckline. The skirts have 6 panels slanted from half thigh to give it a little flare. Till I don’t have everything cut and sewed for the first try I won’t be calm.  I hope I can cumplir with the class of next Tuesday, because some of the techniques I need are taught in this couse. Meanwhile, you can take delight with Amy's Bombshell dress (Sew Well), my hostess. I hope mine turns out that well.

Tuesdays with Gertie and Sew Well

Con la emoción de empezar, no os comenté que el curso que estoy haciendo es el de Bombshell Dress. La tarde de ayer se concentró en el ajuste del cuerpo, y más concretamente las copas. Como yo sospechaba me queda un poco ajustado, pero la única alteración que voy a hacer al respecto es coser un poco más fuera de la línea de costura, ya que es muy poquito. En las copas ha sido diferente, ya que he tenido que hacerlas más grandes. Siguiendo las indicaciones de Gertie (más o menos) y apañando un poco mi maniquí ya que no lo tengo adaptado a  mis medidas, modelé las copas sobre él. Y ahí me he quedado, ya que tuve que repetir la clase un par de veces, para asegurarme de lo que hacía. Aún me falta trasladar los cambios al patrón y volver a hacer la prueba, pero no pude resistirme y me probé la copa sobre el pecho con alfileres y todo, y parece que tiene buena pinta, pero no sabré si ha quedado bien hasta que no vuelva a coser las dos copas y me pruebe el cuerpo completo. La verdad es que una de las partes que más miedo me da es la prueba, normalmente hago mis propios patrones y es cuando descubro lo bien o mal que he desarrollado un patrón, y ver que ha quedado mal o tengo que hacer muchos cambios después del trabajo hecho, me sienta un poco mal.
With the excitement of the beginning, I didn’t mention that the course I’m making is the Bombshell Dress. Yesterday class was concentrated on the fitting of the bodice, and particularly on the cups fitting. As I suspect it’s a little bit tight, but the only alteration I’m going to make is sewing a little bit out of the seam lines, because is just a little bit. In the cups is been different, I’ve had to make them bigger. Following Gertie’s instructions (more or less) and fixing my dress form as I could to my measurements, I drape the cups on it. And there it’s where I am. I had to repeat the class a couple of times, to be sure of what I was doing. I still have to transfer the changes to the pattern and make the muslin again, but I couldn’t resist and I tried the cup on my breast with the pins and all, and it looks quite well, but I won’t know it for sure till I sew the cups and I try the complete bodice. The truth is that the fitting is always one of parts that I fear most, I normally make my own patterns, and it's when I find the good or bad I have developed a pattern, and seeing that it turned out bad or I have to make many changes after all the work made, makes me feel bad.

Para que mi maniquí se aproximara a mis medidas, lo envolví en guata y le pusé un sujetador, con un par de copas de foam y un poco de tela. Me gustaría tener un maniquí con mis medidas, pero estoy dudando entre adaptar el mío con rellenos y forrarle, como Gertie, o hacer uno con cinta americana como Lupecienta. También me gusta la opción de Maria José, aunque no tengo ese tipo de maniquí, pero no descarto comprarlo en el futuro.

Alguna sugerencia?

So that my dressform approach my size, I wrapped it with padding and put a bra, with a pair of bra cups and some fabric. I'd like to have a dressform with my size, but I'm hesitating whether adapting mine with padding and lining, as Gertie's, or making one with duct tape as Lupecienta. I like also María José's option, although I don't have that type of mannequin, but I don't dismiss buying one in the future.

Any suggestions?

Tuesdays with Gertie and Sew Well + Versatile Blogger Award

Hace unos meses me apunté al curso de Gertie de Gertie's New blog for Better Sewing en Craftsy, pero no encontraba el momento de empezar. Entonces me encontré con el blog de Amy de  Sew Well. Ella estaba dedicando los martes a seguir el curso, y me pareció una buena idea para organizarme y poder empezar de una vez. Incluso ha hecho un botón para quién se quiera apuntar a sus martes con Gertie. Así que hoy he tenido mi primera clase, y me ha encantado. He llegado hasta la tercera clase, ya que la primera era de introducción, y la segunda trataba como bajarse el patrón del ordenador. Como yo tenía el patrón que venía en el Burdastyle de Mayo del 2011, esta parte me la he saltado, y simplemente he copiado el cuerpo, por que todavía no sé que tipo de falda hacer. Hacía mucho tiempo que no hacía una prenda a partir de un patrón comercial, hice un vestido de la revista Patrones cuando tenía 16 años y debí quedar traumatizada, por que no recordaba lo difícil que es. Desdobla, busca, y si encuentras, copia, y luego volver a doblar. Cuando he conseguido encontrar todas las piezas del cuerpo, he copiado la talla 40, que era la más cercana a mis medidas, aunque me parece que me va a quedar pequeño. Pero eso no lo sabré hasta la próxima clase, ya que me quedado a medio terminar la prueba del cuerpo, me faltan las copas. La clase es muy amena de seguir, y estoy muy contenta de comprobar que entiendo bastantes más cosas de las que esperaba en inglés. Ahora que he empezado, no pararía hasta terminar. Estoy muy emocionada y tengo ganas de terminar la prueba del cuerpo para ver si tengo que hacer muchas modificaciones. Además es un tipo de prenda que no me he puesto en mi vida y eso hace que tenga más interés en ver el resultado final.

A few months ago I joined the Gertie from Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing course on Craftsy, but I didn’t find the time to begin. Then I found Amy’s blog, Sew Well. She was dedicating Tuesdays to follow the course, and I thought it was a great idea to organize myself and be able to start once and for all. She even had made a button for those who want to join to her Tuesdays with Gertie. So today it’s been my first class, and I’ve loved it. I’ve reached the third class, as the first was an introduction, and the second was about how to download the pattern. As I had the pattern from the Burdastyle May 2011, I’ve jumped this part, and I’ve just copied the bodice, because I don’t know what kind of skirt to make yet. It’s been a long time I didn’t make a garment from a commercial pattern, I made a dress from Patrones magazine when I was 16 and I must have been traumatized, because I didn’t remember how difficult it is. Unfold, search, and if you found, copy and then fold again. When I’ve been able to find the pieces, I’ve copied size 40, which is the closest to my measurements, although I think it’s going to be small. But I won’t know this till next class, I have the bodice muslin half done, I haven’t sewed the cups yet. The class is very enjoyable to follow, and I’m very happy to realize that I understand more things than I thought in English. Now I’ve started, I wouldn’t stop till finishing. I’m very excited and I’m looking forward to finish the bodice muslin to see if I have to make many modifications. Besides it’s a type of garment I’ve never worn in my life and that makes more interesting to see the final result.
